sackboy project

Independent Studies 180

For my independent studies course I have decided to take up a project that is a continuation from a previous project that I have done in Art 13 with soft sculptures. It is of a character from Little Big Planet called Sackboy, and the reason for me to press on with this particular project was because my passion for video games and anything video game related. Also, I thought it would be unique to see this in a gallery.

Conceptual Idea:

I have saved a pdf file of a sackboy pattern and I will make a trip to a Kinkos to have pattern printed to the appropriate size. Afterwards I plan on making at least 6 sackboys (each of them will be about 2 ft in height) made out of canvases and other materials that I can find and think would be sutiable for the project. When I am done with making my sackboys I will spray paint each of them to a white color, so when I project an image on the soft sculpture the image will appear more clearly to the viewers. If time will permit me, I will construct a back drop which I will paint a level from Little Big Planet on canvas cloth to match the theme. It would be pretty awesome to allow the viewers themselves to step into the world of Little Big Planet.

Phase I: Scouting out for materials and doing some research

Where the items I require will most likely be expensive I went to an alternative source...Home Depot where I have found canvas materials for way less than if I were to buy canvas by the yrd at an art or fabric store. But I will have to evetually make a trip to other fabric stores to find other materials to give texture variations to my sackboys.
I will post up some pictures when I get the chance, which will be very soon some time during the weekend.

Phase II: Gathering of Materials

So I have made a trip to Home Depot and bought me a 9' X 12' canvas drop cloth and that will be my material for the sackboys, but I am still contemplating on whether or not if I should look for different materials for the sackboys to give my collection abit of variation. I have also found cutout pattern of sackboy, which I will take the PDF file to kinkos to have the pattern enlarged. Below are the pictures of the pattern that I will be using.

Phase III: Ready Set...CUT!!!
So I have printed and cut out the pattern for my sackboys. I have also started to stenciled out the pattern onto my material.

Phase IV: The Result

I have finally finished one of the many sackboys. This one is abit plain, but I figured, make all the sackboys in their plain form and leave the decorations last. I am still contemplating on which six iconic characters I should make. So far I have thought about making:

1.) Mario from Super Mario Bros.

2.) Kratos from God of War

3.) Old Snake from Metal Gear

4.) Tron from the movie Tron

5.) King Leonidas from 300

6.) the sixth one is still undecided....
